Medieval Åland

In the Middle Ages, Åland was an important cultural and ecclesiastical center in the Baltic Sea. During the 13th and 14th centuries, several impressive stone churches were built, such as those in Sund, Finström, and Lemland. These churches reflect Åland’s early Christianization and its role as part of the Swedish realm. Kastelholm Castle, constructed in the 14th century, became the political center of Åland and a strategic fortress for controlling maritime routes through the archipelago sea. Together, the churches and the castle represent a flourishing medieval society on Åland.
